Now that you have worked on great posture, it’s time to apply that training to roller derby! The best way to improve your balance and stability for roller derby is to practice it on skates. When skating is unavailable, or between practices, you can help yourself along by doing some off skates training. Although it may seem to be the obvious exercise, you can balance on one leg on uneven surfaces all you want, but that won’t transition into being more stable on skates. Mostly because, while playing derby, you will rarely be in a static position. Sports, by nature, are all about moving and taking hits in motion. Therefore, a better way to train off skates is on a slide board. Practice your stride and posture while on the board. Take it up to the next level by having a partner stand at one end of the board and push you off balance. Most people don’t have a slide board, and you don’t need to rush out and buy one. Here are some other training drills off skates that will be beneficial:
- Get into a roller derby stance and have someone push you.
- Do jumps while someone pushes you.
