How do you find that sweet spot? Training, of course, and you can start right now! Just as you are, sitting or standing. Flex your quad muscle. Doesn’t have to be fancy, just squeeze the muscles in your quad. This is body awareness and focus, it’s important. That feeling is your muscle ready to go and jump into action. That’s what you want to be prepared to do on a short notice.
Next, fully relax your quads. Release all tension possible. Feels nice right? When you’re playing roller derby (any sport really) you want to have that relaxed muscle feeling at the start. Roller derby requires you to quickly and unexpectedly change directions and speeds. You need your body to start off nice and loose so you can engage the right muscles at the right time. If you are constantly tense, your reaction to change will be slow.
